A short summary first

This archive collects as little as possible. There are no accounts, no logins, no newsletter, no subscription, nothing for sale and no forms that transmit data to us. If you read articles and leave, we hold nothing about you beyond the ordinary technical logs any web server keeps.

What we collect

We do not ask for and do not want your bank or brokerage account details, holdings, tax file number, government identifiers or passwords. Nothing about this archive requires them. If you send them by mistake, we will delete them and tell you that we have.

What we do not collect

Sensitive information

We do not collect sensitive information as defined in the Privacy Act, including health, racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, or biometric information. Please do not send it to us, as it is not needed for any purpose described in this policy.

Cookies and tracking

This site sets no non-essential cookies of its own. We do not use advertising cookies, cross-site tracking pixels, social media trackers or browser fingerprinting, and we do not build profiles of visitors.

Because the site serves no advertising and sells nothing, there is no advertising technology embedded in it. If analytics or advertising tools are ever introduced, this policy will be updated before they are activated, a cookie notice will appear before any non-essential cookie is set, and each cookie will be described by name and purpose. Where consent is required, it will be obtained before the cookie is set.

Why we collect it and the basis for doing so

We collect personal information only by lawful and fair means, and generally only directly from you. We do not collect it from third parties or data brokers.

How long we keep it

Reader correspondence: up to 24 months, then deleted, except where it documents a correction to a published article, in which case the fact of the correction is retained on the page but your personal details are not. Business records: retained for the period required by Australian tax and business record-keeping rules, generally five years from the end of the relevant income year. Server logs: rotated and deleted on our hosting provider's standard schedule. When information is no longer needed we delete or de-identify it.

Who we share it with

We do not sell, rent, trade or otherwise disclose your personal information to anyone for marketing purposes, and we do not share it with advertisers or data brokers.

Limited disclosure occurs only to service providers that make the site work: our hosting provider, which operates the servers, and our email provider, which delivers messages. These providers handle information only to supply their service to us. We may also disclose information where we are required or authorised to do so by law, or to enforce our legal rights.

Overseas disclosure

Some of our service providers may store or process data on servers located outside Australia, including in the United States and the European Union. Where information is disclosed overseas, we take reasonable steps to ensure it is handled consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles. If you would prefer that your information not be handled offshore, contact us before sending personal information and we can correspond without using those services.

Security

Access to our inbox and records is limited to our editor. We use strong authentication and encryption in transit for the accounts that hold your information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. If a data breach occurs that is likely to result in serious harm to you, we will notify affected individuals and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner as required by the notifiable data breach scheme in the Privacy Act.

Accessing and correcting your information

You may ask us for access to the personal information we hold about you, and ask us to correct it if it is inaccurate, out of date, incomplete, irrelevant or misleading. Write to info@ceramicstory.com and we will respond within 30 days. There is no charge for making a request or for correcting your information, and we will tell you if we cannot comply and why.

Complaints

If you believe we have breached the Australian Privacy Principles or mishandled your personal information, please contact us first at info@ceramicstory.com. We will acknowledge your complaint promptly and aim to resolve it within 30 days.

If you are not satisfied with our response, you may complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC): via the OAIC website, by calling 1300 363 992, or by post to GPO Box 5288, Sydney NSW 2001.

Children

This site is directed at adults interested in the history of Australian business. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes materially, the revised version will be published on this page with a new effective date. The version in force is always the one published here.
