Our articles are written for a general audience. Two readers can read the same history and reasonably reach opposite conclusions about what is right for them. That judgment is theirs to make, and it is one this archive deliberately does not make for anybody.
Historical accounts describe the past
The subject of this archive is what has already happened. A history of a company that failed, or of a company that succeeded, is an account of decisions taken under conditions that no longer exist. We take care to trace every date and figure we publish to a source document, and every article lists the sources used so you can check them. Even so, historical research depends on what has survived. Where the documentary record is thin we say so, and where a detail rests on a single source we flag it rather than present it as settled.
We do not warrant that this site is complete or free from error. If you are relying on a specific figure, verify it against the original document first — the same standard we apply to ourselves. Confirmed errors are corrected on the page with a dated note.
Statements about companies and individuals
Our articles name companies and, where their role is material, individuals. Names appear because they are part of the public record. We report findings in the terms the relevant court, inquiry or regulator used, and we do not allege misconduct that has not been found.
